Beyond the Buzzword — Our WHY Behind ‘Organic Landscaping’
"Organic" is a buzzword, a certification, and an adjective that’s become synonymous with “good” for folks who care about staying healthy and enhancing the well-being of the environment around them.
Definition of organic (adjective) – Merriam-Webster
or·gan·ic | ȯr-ˈga-nik
(1) : of, relating to, yielding, or involving the use of food produced with the use of feed or fertilizer of plant or animal origin without employment of chemically formulated fertilizers, growth stimulants, antibiotics, or pesticides
(2) : of, relating to, or derived from living organisms
Sure, that makes sense, especially around BigAg. But we’re landscapers and foodscapers — what does it mean to us?
For starters, we’re so proud to be Accredited Organic Land Care Professionals through NOFA. In practice, we don’t use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. We deter pests through companion planting, and we enrich soil biology by adding compost—simple practices that build long-term resilience into every landscape we touch.
Beyond what it means, the more important question is: why does it matter?
Does your dog like to roll around in the grass or eat the weirdest stuff out of your garden? What about your kids—do they put whatever they find into their mouths, or build fairy houses in bramble patch every time they step outside?
There is no world in which these kinds of outdoor experiences should be paired with chemical-soaked dirt or a “keep off the lawn” sign.
As humans, it’s in our nature to be outside, interacting with the landscape. When we show up as thoughtful stewards of the land, the land responds with abundance, balance, and an ever-deepening web of life.
We’re organic landscapers so you can engage with your landscape freely. So you can watch your garden buzz with bees, flutter with butterflies, and thrive without a chemical warning sign taped to every petal. Most pesticides and synthetic chemicals aren’t selective—they don’t come with tiny labels that say, “Hey ladybugs and bumblebees, don’t touch this.”
We’re organic landscapers that put our energy toward positive, regenerative land care. We're on a mission to grow more plants that sequester carbon, support pollinators, feed both critters and people, and look stunning while doing it. We say we want to revolutionize our landscapes for a future rooted in health and resilience, so we can't just sprinkle in “a little synthetic fertilizer” to get things going. That shortcut runs counter to the mission. Instead, we source high-quality compost (the more local, the better—keep an eye out for when we’re making it ourselves at the Eco-Hub!) and fill every garden with living, fertile energy.
We’re organic landscapers because the only truly sustainable (sus·tain·able | a method of using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged) path towards cultivating resilient landscapes is through encouraging abundance and cultivating biodiversity.
We are organic landscapers working to create a more resilient future for all of us on this sacred planet.
