Our People
NATE FOURNIER Founder and CEO, Reimagined Roots
With an extensive background in engineering, design, and construction, Nate found his purpose when he took his first Permaculture Design Course (PDC) with Geoff Lawton in 2014. He would convert back yards into whole human ecosystems, providing food, beauty, and function while creating symbiotic relationships with nature.
He has since completed three PDC’s, acquired his General Contractors license, and studied regenerative agriculture abroad. In early 2020, Nate began his professional venture into the rapidly growing field of Earth-care landscaping, as the owner of Reimagined Roots.
STEPHEN GAJ Foreman, Reimagined Roots
Stephen has had a passion for working with nature since he was young, drawn to the balance and beauty of thriving landscapes. This love for the land led him to start his own organic landscaping company, where he focused on creating sustainable, healthy outdoor spaces that harmonize with the environment.
Now, as part of the Reimagined Roots team, he brings that same dedication and experience to every project. He believes in thoughtful, eco-friendly landscaping that nurtures both the land and the people who enjoy it and is excited to help our clients bring their outdoor spaces to life in a way that feels natural and intentional.
DEIRDRE RAKUS Ecological Administrator, Reimagined Roots
Deirdre has always been drawn to the connection between people and the land—from building energy-efficient homes with Habitat for Humanity in college to backpacking through Europe and witnessing how thoughtful design creates both beauty and function. With an MBA in business and a passion for sustainability, she was inspired by permaculture as a way to create regenerative, intentional spaces that support both people and the environment.
Now, as part of the Reimagined Roots team, she is excited to apply that passion and expertise to every project, focusing on business operations and strategy to drive the company’s growth and lasting impact on the environment.
LUCY SMITH VP of Sales and Design, Reimagined Roots
Through her BA in Economics and Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Lucy’s investment in supporting those living in food deserts took her around the world, to Thailand, Hawaii, Costa Rica, studying permaculture. She was determined to re-engage people with indigenous wisdom of growing food and caring for the community.
After finishing her PDC at Finca Tierra in Costa Rica, Lucy began designing independently across the East Coast before teaming up with Nate to provide whole human habitats to the Reimagined Roots community in Central MA.
In Ancient Greek, "arete" is often translated as "excellence" or "virtue." It encompasses the idea of fulfilling one's potential, achieving the highest level of effectiveness, and contributing positively to various aspects of life, aligning well with the desire to maximize potential in individuals, ecosystems, and capabilities.
