3 Ways to Get Started on Your Garden after June

If you’re worried it’s too late in the season to start your own garden, edible landscape, or tree orchard think again. While many folks like to get the jump on their garden in the spring, it’s also the busiest time of year for many of us with school letting out and calendars getting quickly packed with summer activities. Don’t fret! Here are 3 ways to get started on your garden in Massachusetts after June:

  1. Install Raised Beds - Raised beds offer more flexibility to home owners, warming up more quickly in the spring, but also allowing for better drainage, less weeding and maintenance. It’s also easier to make sure the soil is ready for planting so you can get started right away.

  2. Plant Short-term Crops - As long as you plant short-term crops such as leafy greens, spinach, or herbs that can mature by the fall, you can still get an amazing harvest from your garden starting later in the summer. Depending on the sunlight, composition of your yard, and the time of year, we can help you identify what crops will work best.

  3. Add some Fruit Trees and Berry Bushes - As long as you carefully water these plants, you can get started with fruit trees and berry bushes later in the season too. You may be surprised to learn that fall can be the absolute best time to plant fruit trees. We have apple, pear, peach, plum, hazelnut trees and more available in our local Worcester Nursery.

Even late into the fall can be a great time prepare your home garden either by planting fruit trees, berry bushes, or just preparing for the season next year so you’re ready to go as soon as spring comes.
